The LineUp at Wai Kai is everything you love about Hawaii in an experience that's anything but typical. The LineUp brings the best of the island's activities -- surfing, stand-up paddle boarding, outrigger canoeing, dining, and entertainment -- as attractions never before available in one location, celebrating our deep connection to water. The LineUp is a meeting place for locals, aspiring surfers to pro surfers, and travelers alike. Construction began in October 2020 and is on track for opening early 2023.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Director of Surf Operations is responsible for the daily operations of the surf experience of the LineUp at Wai Kai.

MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES:

Management Responsibilities

  • Hiring, Training & Scheduling - responsible for the hiring, training and scheduling of supervisors and hourly staff working at the Wai Kai Wave (and collaborating closely with the Manager of Waterfront Operations that will have staff jointly trained and will rotate staff between venues
  • Oversee staff job performance to ensure exceptional guest service delivery and foster team camaraderie to achieve a high level of employee morale and enthusiasm 
  • Build and present annual budgets and operating and capital plans for the Surf Business unit of The Line Up
  • Manage the daily operations to achieve the budget targets for revenue and gross operating profit and adjust operations as needed to reach those budget targets
  • Conduct regular employee performance evaluations and training sessions

SPECIFIC DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Surf Operations

  • Surf Technology - become the lead on the operations of the Citywave® technology including the ability to train other staff members in the day-to-day operations. Work with Citywave® team ongoing to ensure the wave operates and functions as needed for ongoing daily operations. 
  • Wave Programming & Lane Configurations - work with the Marketing & Sales and Guests Services team to ensure the surf menu offerings and daily lane configurations (venue can operate from 1 to 3 lanes of surfing) are set up to maximize guest experience and achieving revenue goals
  • Water Treatment - become trained on all water treatment equipment and testing mechanisms of the surf pool to ensure that a safe water environment is maintained at all times. Liaise regularly with key vendors who are providing the water treatment equipment and chemicals. 
  • Surf Rental Boards - manage the fleet of surf equipment and safety equipment for surf operations. Including overseeing regular equipment maintenance, upkeep and ordering of new equipment as required to maintain a quality fleet for our guest experience. As well, the coordination of regular demo-days with local shapers would be anticipated.
  • Operations Manual - develop and update a customized and comprehensive operations manual for the Wai Kai Wave that will be used as part of the staff training and daily checklists
  • Point of Sale - oversee set-up and on-going operations of the surf products on the point-of-sale system and ensure the staff is fully trained to effectively use the system
  • Safety - Oversee all Surf Operations Safety procedures that will need to be finalized in the Operations Manual (including safety equipment and injury procedures and reporting) and ensure that all safety protocols are adhered and incident reports filed in a timely manner.

Wai Kai Wave Surf Academy

  • Program Development - Working with Wai Kai Wave's ambassador, Shane Beschen and WKW management to create a variety of surf lessons, progression programs, clinics and high-performance coaching programs, Camps etc. 
  • Work with Surfline for both video coaching modules that WKW will be utilizing for coaching and training purposes (as well as guest purchase of video/photo packages) 
  • Scheduling appropriate staff for lessons and scheduled training programs
  • Coordinating high-performance coaches required for elite programs with available regional pro-surfers (contractors). 

Surf Events, Competitions and Series

  • The Manager of Surf Operations will be responsible for all contests and competitions hosted at the Wai Kai Wave which will include hiring judges, announcer(s) and other event production staff that maybe needed. This also will include working with a data and graphics programs (Liveheats.com) and working with local production resources for live webcasts for feature events 
  • Community programming - Work with community surf clubs, groups and non-profits for allocating access to surf the wave. 
  • Coordinate and/or Host VIP surf sessions that will include Pro Surfers, Celebrities, Influencers and VIP's

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in the surf park or surf business space
  • Lifeguard Certification and CPR training
  • Experience in managing staff
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines
  • Computer literate with working proficiency of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and some familiarity with PowerPoint or presentation tools)
  • Undergraduate degree preferred. Will also consider a combination of education and experience.

WORKING CONDITIONS / PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Must be fluent in oral and written English
  • Competent at surfing and familiar with the waterman culture of Hawaii 
  • Schedule flexibility will be required, particularly around special events and holidays
  • Prolonged periods of time outdoors and standing, walking, bending, and kneeling.
  • Must be able to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
